Grout's front door has one of those warped-glass spyholes that makes it possible to see out, but very inconvenient to see in. That's your first clue.


The door opens onto an entryway lined with clocks, because some things have to be done properly, and that gapes open into a spacious Victorian-looking parlour. It isn't square, but has a number of odd angles and strange nooks.

Key features include:

→ a multitude of wooden writing desks
→ veeeery intricate patterns all over the room: on the wallpaper, set in brass into the floor, set in parquet into the ceiling, and so on
→ also, some ludicrously pretty glass lampshades
→ chandeliers (with flame-shaped lightbulbs instead of flames)
→ a fancy but unlit fireplace
→ in front of which is arranged a red leather armchair/sofa set
→ nearby is a gramophone and shelf of records
→ behind a curtain, a wrought-iron bed which has never been slept in
→ a wooden floor-to-ceiling bookcase which definitely isn't a secret door, and behind that secret door, a small space with Grout's actual bed
→ a black-framed mirror
